Program of study – Automotive Engineering, level 3

Analysis of Learners and Context


Our student demographic is made up of mostly young males looking to enter into the automotive industry as repair technicians. The remained of the students are a mixture of young females that have a strong interest in cars and older students looking to retrain in a new area or have been working as labour and now looking for a formal qualification.

This is an open entry course, with a minimum achievement school level  of 10 credits English and math, and a capability assessment if they have not meet this criteria.

The course is designed to train people to become automotive repair technician’s, by delivering the theory and practical to a level that will make them easily employable and take out a large chunk out of their apprenticeship.   Our learners’ style of learning is more of “hands on” type of learning, where we have developed the course to turn as much theory into practical lessons.

We use a mixture of online and hand out material to present the theory content. These contain good pictures and descriptions and with the online resources they contain readings, videos, quizzes and tests to check their knowledge, which can be accessed through the internet.

With practical classes we demonstrate/ model best practice and then allow students to repeat the procedure until they a have achieved a competency rating to pass as an assessment. This is also support in real life situations with the working garage, a commercial component of the automotive department.

The course is made up of 50 unit standards at level 2, 3 & 4, selected with the support of our industry PEAC to mold the students into good potential employees, the program runs for 34 weeks from mid-February till end of November.

After completion of the level 3 program, the students sign into an apprenticeship agreement with and employer and MITO to complete their training up to level 4, to become a trade qualified automotive technician.
